Attorney Florence Murray Invited to Speak at Bard College Symposium on Environmental Contamination

|

On April 11, 2025, Bard College is hosting a symposium about the environmental contamination that is threatening the Hudson/ Mahicantuck River, and Attorney Florence Murray of Murray & Murray will be there as a keynote speaker.

The symposium, titled “The Fate of the River,” will focus on two sources of environmental contamination threatening the river:

  • High levels of PCB contamination that has been detected in the water
  • “Bomb trains” that are eroding the west bank of the river

Attorney Florence Murray was invited to share her insight as a trial lawyer with a history of handling complex and high-stakes injury claims, like those that followed the catastrophic railroad derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. The colloquially named “bomb trains” on the Hudson/Mahicantuck River are overloaded freight trains packed with Bakken shale oil and a variety of other undisclosed chemicals. There is a justified fear among communities along the river that the trains could explode if they are ever derailed. Attorney Murray will discuss this precarious situation and the legal action that could follow, not just from a “bomb train” explosion but also from injuries or wrongful deaths caused by the river contamination.

Other professionals who will speak during The Fate of the River symposium will include:

  • Jon Bowermaster, a filmmaker and writer
  • Jeremy Cherson, an Associate Director of Government Affairs at Riverkeeper
  • Erin Doran, a Senior Staff Attorney at Food & Water Watch
  • David O. Carpenter, the Director of the Institute for Health and the Environment at SUNY Albany
